Excellence: A Goal Worth Pursuing
by Cynthia Heald
"This I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ" Philippians 1:9-10
I enjoyed reading A Goal Worth Pursuing by Cynthia Heald and felt it was a good, solid devotional meant to guide women in attaining excellence in multiple disciplines. The most recent copy out is a 30th anniversary edition, which shows that this is a classic devotional.
The reading guides us through the meaning of Excellence, according to world, and according to the Bible, showing us how our values may change depending on where we place them.
Excellence is really attained through becoming more like Christ, through obedience and discipline. I found Chapter 7 to be especially interesting and beneficial as it mentions to be "guarded by discretion" in our actions with "gracious, thoughtful speech," and to be discreet- careful, sensitive, and godly as we relate to others and our circumstances."
I appreciate this book because it is not fully laid out, it is meant to be more of a devotional because it requests that the reader look up scriptures and study them instead of having the scriptures written in; it gives the reader a chance to fully understand the chapter and take time in the bible as well.
Ultimately, this book leads us to be more Godly women, perfecting our excellence by purity, obedience, and discipline. Cynthia Heald encourages us to dig in deeper to the scriptures and perceive fully what the bible says about being a Woman of Excellence. It is a great guiding tool and I recommend.
